Marpa

A Thanka painted in traditional Tibetan style showing the great spiritual leader Marpa of Lhotrak. Marpa (1010-1113 AD) was a landowning family man and a Tibetan merchant, who made the difficult journey over the rugged Himalayas to India in search of spiritual wisdom. He brought back teaching on yoga and meditation, and founded the Kagyu school of Tibetan yogis that exists up to the present day under the leadership of His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa.

The Thanka is an exceptional masterpiece following the Gabhri school of Tibetan art. Marpa is shown seated on a magnificent throne, and holds a book in his left hand. The latter reminds us that Marpa was famous as a great translator of Sanskrit texts. The book also represents the secret yogic knowledge that he brought back from India. In the foreground we see Marpa's four leading disciples. Off to Marpa's right is shown a tower, constructed by his most famous disciple Milarepa.

Notes by Lama Kunzang Palden Rinpoche.
