Sand Scripts, vol.1

Walking on a beach I came across eighty million year old fossils laid on the sand. Examining them closely I pondered on the perfection of the calligraphic lines and the spaces between them. It reminded me of the art works of both eastern and western masters. Names like Miro, Kandinsky, Chi bai Chu, came to mind. At the time I was involved in a collaboration with a Chinese calligraphy master (the late Prof. Jian Jing). The similarities were awe inspiring. Footsteps in sand, patterns of time, waves of the ocean and my breath, calligraphic lines, nature and man, rolled into one.

The Process behind the Images

Poetics of Space: Each image is made in the camera (digital, Nikon D100) with a single, hand-held, long-time exposure. There is no manipulation of the image on the computer, except for some intensification/saturation of the colour. “Painting with light” is an overworked phrase that still best fits what I do in the camera for this body of work.
